Why Handmade Soap? Some common questions about the product we love.

Handmade soap is made with simple, natural ingredients.  Our handmade soaps are made with various skin loving oils, milks, butters, and botanicals that clean your skin without stripping away it's natural oils.  Ever notice how dried out your skin becomes after using commercial soaps?  That's because it's chemical composition strips away your natural oil along with the dirt.

Examples of the skin loving ingredients we use:

MILK - We use various milks in our soaps, so they keep your skin hydrated & happy.  Cleopatra was famous for her milk baths because of it's benefits for your skin.

COCONUT OIL - There isn't enough we can say about the many benefits of this oil.  Simply good for your body, inside & out.  It also makes soaps harder and longer lasting.

SHEA BUTTER -Shea butter contains vitamins & minerals plus fatty acids and is a great moisturizer, anti inflammatory, and anti aging ingredient.

GLYCERIN:  All the natural glycerin is retained in handmade soaps.  In commercial soaps, the glycerin is removed and sold for use in lotions, moisturizers, etc.  Glycerin is a natural humectant, and is really the star when it comes to moisturizing your skin and keeping it hydrated.

We also use combinations of olive oil, sunflower oil, palm oil, and canola oil to make a high quality soap that gives a nice creamy and luxurious lather.  Botanicals are added to some of our soaps for exfoliation.  We also use high quality, skin safe fragrance oils for a broad range of individual scent preferences.

Some commonly asked questions

Does natural handmade soap mean I will not have a reaction to it?

No.  Just because something says it is natural, does not mean that you will not have a reaction.  (Poison Ivy is natural, right?)  We provide a list of ingredients on all of our soaps so you can see exactly what you are putting on your skin.  If you have ever had a reaction to any of the ingredients listed, then please do not use.  As an example, we have had a couple of inquiries about the coconut milk & coconut oil in our soaps.  These people were allergic to coconut, so they cannot use our soaps.

I'm allergic or sensitive to fragrance, do you have any soap for me?

Yes, we have a category specifically for those sensitive to fragrances.  You can view our unscented soaps here.

How do you make your soaps?

We make soap entirely by hand just like your grandmother used to make.  (Okay, maybe not just like grandma who only needed basic soap for washing, the method is the same but we add essential oils, premium fragrance oils and various herbs for a special treat.  Who doesn't like to be pampered?)   All of our soap is made in small batches with only the purest ingredients, they do not contain any preservatives, bleaches, or fillers.  We specialize in making handmade soaps with milk.  Milk soaps are extra creamy, and provide wonderful lather while hydrating your skin.  We use Coconut Milk, Goat Milk, and Buttermilk for our soaps, and our formula is also enriched with natural, unrefined shea butter and high quality oils such as olive & coconut for a gentle, luxurious soap with a creamy lather..  Here at Hickory Ridge Soap Co., we believe you should treat yourself to the best.   The various herbs and ingredients we add to our products are all beneficial to your skin and well being, and not only are our products better for your skin, they are better for the planet.  The benefits of all natural, handmade beauty products is endless.

Do you use any animal products in your soaps?

All of our soaps are vegan friendly except for our goat milk soaps.

How do I care for my soaps?

Place your soaps in a cool, dry place away from sunlight & humidity and space them apart to allow for plenty of air circulation.  Bars will continue to harden over time.  If you have ordered loaves or guest soaps, then your soap will need an additional 2-3 weeks to cure.  If you have ordered an uncut loaf, it is best to go ahead and cut your loaf into bars while the soap is still somewhat soft.  (Loaves will harden over time and may become harder to cut, though they will still cure if allowed to remain whole.)

What should I do to make my soap last longer?

Allow your soap to thoroughly dry between uses by placing on a soap dish that allows for plenty of air circulation.

Will my soap look exactly like the ones in the picture?

Our soaps are made in small batches, completely by hand so the soap you receive may look different from those pictured.  Each bar & batch we make is unique and will not look exactly the same.

Does handmade soap have a shelf life?

Yes, our soaps are preservative free so they will last about 1 year.  We only make small batches to provide the best quality soap.  We do not have soap sitting around on shelves for months at a time.
